In 2019, a hydrogen strategy was adopted for the five federal states of Hamburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The coastal states of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are naturally suited for the production of "green" hydrogen (due to wind power and hydropower, among other things), while Hamburg, due to its geopolitical location, wants to focus and orientate itself towards storage and onward transportation. In the first step, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has made €700 million available for corresponding lead projects throughout Germany. By now, probably several hundred project outlines have been submitted, a number in the lower two-digit range have already been approved and others are in the approval phase. Of course, the Ukraine crisis is also accelerating the research, development and implementation of hydrogen as an energy carrier in northern Germany.
